ACTIVITY #2 – “Who is Responsible
for Sunday School Growth?”

(Read the following paragraph and then write an answer for each of the questions that follow.)

What do you do in your Sunday school? This is sort of a “trick” question. Most people would probably answer this question by listing the jobs that they have in their Sunday school – teacher, superintendent, pianist, etc. But, that is not all that they do. They participate in the lesson, whether or not they are a teacher. They talk to people, they make them feel welcome. They are a friend to other members. They help and support their fellow Christians. At least, these should be the things that everyone is doing in their Sunday school.

Just as everyone is or should be involved in their Sunday school in a variety of ways, so everyone also should be involved in the work of helping their Sunday school grow! It’s YOUR Sunday school! If it is to grow, it will – to a large degree – be up to YOU!

Questions:

1.The “Steps To Sunday School Success” workshop is designed to help all persons – leaders, teachers and ordinary members – become involved in Sunday school growth and renewal. In which group or groups would you place yourself (leaders, teachers or members)? Which group do you think is most important? Why?

2.Do you think that each of these groups can play a role in Sunday school growth? Why? How?

3.If you are not a Sunday school teacher or leader, do you still have something to do in Sunday school?

4.Sunday school was started as a “lay movement.” What does that mean? How was that tradition continued over the years?

5.What should be the role of the clergy in Sunday school?

6.What opportunities for service to God and others does Sunday school provide?
